History of Ashfield Sports Club

The club formed in 1970 and was named Ashfield Dynamo. Its players first competed in the Semi Professional League in Division 2 in 1976. Following a FIFA directive the club was renamed Ashfield Soccer and Sports Club. In 1996 a partnership with Bunbury United saw the name change to Ashfield-Bunbury. In 2001 Bunbury Soccer Club decided to strike out on its own and the name changed back to Ashfield Soccer and Sports Club. At the 2010 AGM it was decided that the club change its name to the Ashfield Sports Club from the 2011 season.

Ashfield teams won the Division 3 title in 1988 and the Division 1 title in 1998 and 2001 earning a place in the State Premier League in 1999 and 2002.

Ashfield also won the Division 1 Night Series Cup in 2007 when they finished second in the league season. The current Division 1 side were runner-ups in the 2010 competition.

One of our life members John Van Hoek has been inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame for his contribution to football.

The Ashfield Sports Club has a facility that is the envy of many of its rivals and boasts a small stadium capable of seating about 600 people and a clubroom with a balcony that overlooks the ground. Recently the Club made plans to add to the current two changing facilities and expand to four with work expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2013 Season. The Club facilities are being renovated and are available for private functions and corporate training days.

The Ashfield Sports Club members are looking to diversify their membership and to involve the local community. The club is also the home of Ashfield Can, a community based group that runs several initiatives to strengthen the community spirit. The Club is also home to the Swan Districts Softball Team and an Ashfield Ladies’ darts team.

The Ashfield reserve was also the home venue for the Perth Kangaroos who competed in the Malaysian League. Despite winning that competition the Kangaroos disbanded and many of its players went on to be founding members of Perth Glory.

This year (2012) Ashfield SC has entered into a ground sharing agreement with the Shamrock Rovers. This venture is a first of its type for the State and will be a beneficial arrangement for both clubs in the long term enabling them to develop the ground in partnership with the Town of Bassendean.

Address

I am looking forward to the 2012 football season and our Ashfield teams enjoying more success on the pitch than last season. Matt Carruthers has enlisted Grant Learmont to assist him with our first team. Grant is a very experienced player and from what I have seen of him on the training park and at games, works very well with Matt. This is good news for our Club.

This season sees Maurice taking on a coaching and training role with Nigel Comito as the Reserve team coach and Tony Campbell continuing as the Youth Development coach. Tony did a brilliant job last year and I only expect him to continue the great work he is doing. Nigel is stepping into the role of Reserve coach in his own right and he has also impressed in training. With the support of Matt, Maurice, Tony and Grant he can only succeed in what is one of the toughest assignments in football.

We are very pleased with our playing stocks this year. Many new faces have decided to play at Ashfield Sports Club. We are confident that with our coaches and the quality of our players we can improve on our sixth placed standing last year.

The women’s softball team and darts team continue to do well in their competitions and have recommenced their competitions at our Club. I am sure they will continue to be successful and enjoy a season of fun and strong competition.

Ashfield CAN members continue their good work in the community. On Australia Day they were awarded the Premier’s Award for community service. This was an excellent outcome highlighted with the bench project designed and implemented by local artist Lucy Bromell. She worked with Ashfield Primary School students and the Ashfield Community resulting in this great recognition for partnerships in the community.

Neighbourhood Watch continues their good work with Verna Schreuders and Dave Love doing a great job.

Martin Whitely is continuing as our patron, Martin is the Member of Parliament for Bassendean. Martin and his office staff do a great job in arranging V.I.P’s to toss the coin at each of our home games including councillors and prominent community members.

We continue to enjoy good support from the Town of Bassendean, the CEO Bob Jarvis, Mayor John Gangell and Deputy Mayor Gerry Pule. The town has replaced the chain mesh fence around the perimeter of the main pitch at our club. This will allow us to hang advertising signage for our sponsors. We would welcome local businesses to become involved with our Sports Club and to advertise their businesses around the fence line or inside the clubrooms.

The Town of Bassendean has also improved our playing surface on Pitch 1 (Main Pitch) with its second year of weed eradication of a rather tough weed that will take a few more years to get on top of. We will continue to work with the Town of Bassendean to encourage sport and a healthy safe environment for our community and members.

We welcome Shamrock Rovers as an associate member group. They will ground share with us for Season 2012. This will allow the local community to attend Ashfield’s home ground and view a good standard of football every week.

Ashfield 4 Balcatta 1

A great night for the boys in red, Ashfield playing some well disciplined football to be 3 - 1 up with 20 minutes to go Balcatta press the Self destruct button, having 3 players sent from the field of play.

4 -1 down saw some interesting tactics from the Premier League champions as they literally sat on the ball and eventually used it as a pillow as they watched their night series hopes die.

Well done to the Ashfield lads into the final 8 with nothing to lose.

Membership fees

2012 memberships fees are now due. These include $40 for full social membership or there are discounted rates for aged pension card holders.

Players fees:

Basic package $250 - includes club membership, Football West fees. Suitable for Under-18s, Social and Veteran teams.

Professional package $450 - includes everything above plus individualised kit, three pairs of socks, club shirt and much more yet to be finalised. The essential package is for the first-team squad and anyone who wants their own personalised kits.

Bonus package - all the extras in the professional set up.

Our glorious leader El Presidente Bill Busby also doubles as the Chairman of the Ashfield Can community group. On Australia Day 2012 our Billy along with Ashfield Can founder and local artist Lucy Bromell received a well-deserved citizenship award.

Ashfield Can is a corporate member of the Ashfield SC and we are very proud of their achievement and our association with them.
